1. Write out the draft without looking back, edit later
2. Include only things relevant to plot or character development
3. Keep an eye on -ly words, replace 500 -ly words with 5 words that mean the same thing and it makes 2500 words with more detail than the one
4. Keep dialog assparse as possible
5. Don’t get bogged down in description
6. Remember to develop characters without shoving it in the reader’s face, development should hardly be noticed
7. Sentence fragments are okay. Really. Use them for emphasis. It’s kinda their deal.
8. DON’T WORRY ABOUT WORD COUNT. FORGET WORD COUNT, WRITE WHAT YOU PLANNED TO WRITE, FILL IN EXTRANEOUS DETAILS WITH EDITING
9. This is arough draft. It’s going to sound horrible. It’ll probably be sub-par. This is the hardest part.
10. Finish.

What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me . . . is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For thefirst couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’thave this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be asgood as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

¿Se puede enseñar a escribir? Está claro que se puede aprender, pero desde que las letras son letras el debate sobre la enseñanza dela escritura se ha repetido una y otra vez. Hay facultades de Ciencias, de Matemáticas, de Bellas Artes, de Arquitectura, por citar sólo disciplinas tan creativas como la novela o la poesía. Pero no ocurre lo mismo con la literatura. Sin embargo, como demostró este sábado el suplemento de libros de The Guardian, los consejos de los escritores pueden ser muy valiosos.


El diario británico tomócomo percha un libro de próxima publicación de Elmore Leonard, uno de los maestros de la novela negra estadounidense, titulado Ten rules of writting, para consultar a casi 30 autores (entre los que hay nombres como Richard Ford, Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, PD James, Zadie Smith --en la imagen--, Ian Rankin o Joyce Carol Oates) sobre sus reglas para escribir. La gran pregunta que surge después desu lectura es si la literatura tiene reglas. Es cierto que gran parte de los mejores libros de la historia rompieron los moldes, inventaron géneros, desde Heródoto, hasta Cervantes, Montaigne, o Joyce, pero no es menos cierto que también hubo escritores inmensos, que supieron ceñirse a las reglas de su época (Shakespeare y el teatro isabelino es el ejemplo más claro).
Es difícil resumir lascuatro páginas (tamaño sábana) con apasionantes consejos que ha ofrecido The Guardian pero aquí van algunos. Este artículo es más largo que otros que aparecen en Papeles perdidos, pero son consejos que merecen la pena:
- "No te sientes en mitad del bosque. Si te pierdes en la trama o no sabes como seguir, vuelve sobre tus pasos". "Rezar puede funcionar. O leer a otro. O tratar de visualizar el Santo...
