Mother and Child Relationships in Like Water for Chocolate and Rain of Gold

Rain of Gold (written by Victor Villaseñor) and Like Water for Chocolate (written by Laura Esquivel) are two similar,but yet different novels. Rain of Gold is a struggling, true love story while Like Water for Chocolate is more of a struggling, fictional love story. What most caught my attention though was therelationship that the mothers from each novel had with their children. In the book Like Water for Chocolate the relationship with Mama Elena and her daughters was completely different from Doña Guadalupe’srelationship with her children.
In Like Water for Chocolate Mama Elena’s unfairness, cruelness, and violence makes one of her daughter, Tita (main character) hate her. “’I hate you, I’ve always hatedyou!’” (Esquivel 199) Tita never liked her mother. Mama Elena would always mistreat her, criticize every single thing she did, Tita never did anything right according to Mama Elena. She wouldn’t letTita marry because she was obligated to follow a family tradition; since she was the youngest daughter she has to take care of Mama Elena until she dies. Mama Elena would also always be hitting Tita to“teach her a lesson,” “… giving Tita a tremendous slap that left her rolling.” (Esquivel 27) of course it made Tita resent her mother even more. What kind of mother daughter relationship is that?It’s definitely not the kind of relationship I would want with my mother.
In Rain of Gold the relationship between Doña Guadalupe and Lupe was nothing like the relationship between Mama Elena and Tita.Doña Guadalupe was more of a caring, understanding mother, very religious and not violent at all. Lupe, Doña Guadalupe’s youngest daughter, was very close to Doña Guadalupe. Lupe loved, respected, caredand was very attached to her mother.
