As we have introduced before, the setting is an important thing we have to take intoaccount when we are going to talk about a novel, we can make and extraordinary example of this comparing the gothic novel The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe with The Yellow Sweater byHugh Garner; both novels are fantastic and will help us to see and understand how the setting can manage our feelings and thoughts.
We are going to start talking about the setting of the Gothic NovelThe fall of the house of Usher. This novel shows us the most remarkable characteristics of a setting full of sorrow, terror, madness and obscure and inexplicable things that happen around thecharacters. This short story begins at dusk on a sad and dark autumn day and the writer describes the place as a lugubrious and forlorn countryside where the House of Usher Family is located; the mansion issurrounded by fungus and a small lake, there is a dark and gloomy atmosphere, and with this, the author can instill fear in the reader.
The lake plays an important part of the story and due to itsdarkness, it resembles a moat; a bridge across this lake provides access to the mansion, which is as lugubrious as the atmosphere surrounding it. All these elements and the setting of the firstparagraphs prepare us to the story we are going to read, and since now we can say it’s about supernatural and weird things taking place in the mansion.
