SOME RULES ABOUT FORMING COMPARATIVE ANDSUPERLATIVE
ADJECTIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE
One syllable adjetives generally form the compartive by adding – er and the superlative by adding – est, e. g:
SOFT
SOFTER
THE SOFTESTCHEAP
CHEAPER
THE CHEAPEST
SWEET
SWEETER
THE SWEETEST
THIN
THINNER
THE THINNEST
SPELLING RULES
NOTE: That if a one syllable adjetive ends in a single vowel letter followedby a single sonsonant letter, the consonant letter is doubled e.g.: Thin Thinner Big Biggest
If an adjetive ends in e, this is removed when adding er, est , e.g.: Wide Wider Widest
If an adjetive end in a consonant followed by – y . Y is replaced by i when adding er, est, e.g.: Dry Drier Driest
TWO SYLLABLE ADJETIVES
Two syllable adjectives which end in- y usually formthe comparatives by adding: er and the superlatives by adding - est. Note: The change of y to I in the comparative / superlative) e.g.:
ADJECTIVE LUCKY PRETTY TIDY
COMPARATIVE LUCKIERPRETTIER TIDIER
SUPERLATIVE THE LUCKIEST THE PRETTIEST THE TIDIEST
TWO SYLLABLE ADJETIVES
Two syllable adjectives ending in: ed- ing – ful or less. Always form the comparative with more and thesuperlative with the most , e.g:
ADJECTIVE WORRIED BORING CAREFUL USELESS COMPARATIVE MORE WORRIED MORE BORING MORE CAREFUL MORE USELESS SUPERLATIVE THE MOST WORRIED THE MOST BORING THE MOSTCAREFUL THE MOST USELESS
THREE SYLLABLE ADJETIVE
Adjectives which have three or more syllable always form the comparative and superlative with more and the most, e.g.:
ADJECTIVE DANGEROUSDIFFICULT COMPARATIVE MORE DANGEROUS MORE DIFFICULT SUPERLATIVE THE MOST DANGEROUS THE MOST DIFFICULT
