Comparatives And Superlatives
*Comparative
We use the comparative form to show the difference between two objects.
Structure:
-One syllable adjectives:
Add “-er” to the end of theadjective.
Remove the “y” from the adjective and add “-ier”.
*Note: Double the final consonant if preceded by a vowel.
Example: My kite flies higher than yours
Alejandro is faster than RaúlVeracruz is bigger than Queretaro
-Two syllable adjectives ending in “-y”
Example: I am happier with you, my friend.
Yesterday was sunnier than today.
The red car isprettier than the yellow one
-Two, 2three or more syllable adjectives:
Place “more” before the adjective.
Example: This book is more interesting than the magazine you are reading.
Alfredois more handsome than Daniel
*Superlative
We use the superlative form when speaking about three or more objects, to show which object is “the most” of something.
Structure:
-Onesyllable adjectives:
Place “the” before the adjective and add “-est” to the end of the adjective.
*Note: Double the final consonant if rpeceded by a vowel.
Example:
-Two, three or more syllableadjectives:
Place “the most” before the adjective.
Example: This is the most difficult thing I´ve ever done.
That was the most interesting movie in forever
-Two syllable adjective ending in“-y”:
Place “the” before the adjective and remove the “y”.
Example: She is in love, now she is the happiest person in the world.
He is the funniest man you’ll ever meet.
