William Shakespeare is known as one of the most influential writers of his time, he was able to express in words his deepest feelings and brought art into writing. Hewrote plays and sonnets that include most of the universal and relatable themes of this and their time. Sonnet 130, and 137 are not an exception. Sonnet 130 portraits a man who is dwelling with thefact that he is madly in love with a woman that is not beautiful, and sonnet 137 depicts a man that loves a woman who doesn’t return his love. Both of these sonnets tell the reader about a love thatfights all circumstances and problems. Therefore, Sonnet 130 and sonnet 137 uses similes and personification to create a distinctive tone, and metaphors to create an image of their lover.
In sonnet130 the author expresses his love for a women that is not attractive, throughout the sonnet the author uses similes to describe his lover, and therefore he describes how their love is capable of goingbeyond beauty. When he uses similes he compares his lover to things that are universally beautiful, for example the sun, red lips, roses, for this are things that are commonly used to describe a women.Shakespeare uses these objects too, but gives them a turn and says that his lover is nothing like those elements of nature, but he stills sees her beautiful, and this shows his attitude towards her:true love. “My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun; coral is far more red than her lips red… I have seen roses damask’s, red and white but no such roses see I in her lips”. The speaker compares hislover to these elements telling the reader that even though she is nothing like them for the speaker he can see beauty where there isn’t, showing once again that his love that goes beyondsuperficialities.
