Computer Mediated Discourse
During the explosive growing of the Internet in the 90s, it became accessible to most people all around the world. Opening this way a new era in human communication allowing people with common interests keep in touch and share information, creating this way huge social networks, which with time developed their own slang, and nowtheir Computer Mediated Discourse (CMD) is changing our discourse outside Internet. Nowadays most people belong to at least two social networks, name them school, job, internet forum, blog, etc. Since this essay wants to probe the influence of the CMD on the not computer mediated discourses, it only focuses on the interaction between people who belong to or is in contact with an off-line socialnetwork and an on-line social network. Before going any further it is important to demonstrate that on-line communities are social networks in deed. According with Crispin et al 2004:112 when we are talking about a social network we are talking about some or all of the following variables:

• Being in face-to-face contact and/or having regular contact. • Having shared goals and/or producing and usingcommodities. • Having the opportunity for dialogue and social interaction. • Having a common cultural heritage or history. • Enjoying unique communal features and/or developing ‘organic’ social formations (e.g. people often like to be able to say, ‘This is the way we do things round here.’).

Taking as an example couchsurfing.com1, one of the many on-line communities, we can find on the Net. Twoquotations from this site are enough to find the variables pointed by Crispin et al.

1

Couchsurfing is an internet community for backpackers all around the world, who want to share their culture and couch for a couple of days with other backpackers. Users contact each other via the website and arrange social meetings and accommodation for the ones who are traveling.
