History

The territory of New Zealand is one of the last places in the world in a suitcase. Probably the Maori arrived between X and XIIIcentury, though new evidence that date back to the first century The first Europeans to arrive in the region did so in the unlikely journey of John Jufré and Juan Fernandez in Oceania, at which time they would have discovered New Zealand to Spain in late 1576;This event is based on a document presented to Philip II and in archaeological (Spanish style helmets) found in caves in the upper North Island[citation needed]. But most famous is the Dutch travel Abel Janszoon Tasman, who sailed down the coast of South Island and the North in 1642. The Dutchmen called Staten Island Land ( "Land of the States'), and even beginning of this century some 100,000 New Zealanders have Dutch origins, and later was named in New Zealand English. In 1769 James Cook made several surveys of these islands. This ledto further European whaling expeditions and subsequent colonization.

New Zealand became a British colony under the Treaty of Waitangi of 1840, under promises that were not fully met. Until today, this treaty is being discussed and remains the source of division and resentment for many. In 1861 gold was discovered on land that Maori accepted as the treaty marked the beginning of the so-calledMaori War.

In 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world to grant universal suffrage to women with no age restriction, by the movement led by Kate Sheppard, although women were only allowed to vote (vote) but not to run elections (passive suffrage). The women's vote ballots were taken just weeks before the general election. Since 1919, New Zealand women gained suffrage passive. This country became an independent dominion on September 26, 1907 by royal proclamation. The independence was ceded by the British Parliament with the Statute of Westminster in 1931 and was adopted by the Parliament of New Zealand in 1947. Since then an independent state that belongs to the Commonwealth of Nations or Commonwealth.
