Must (have), Can't (have)

Regla fácil:

En este caso must (have) y can't (have) se utilizan para hablar de cosas de las que estamos seguro son verdad.

Must (certezas)

Ejemplo

English: You've been traveling all day. You must be tired.
Español: Has estado viajando todo el día. Debes estar cansado.

Can't (imposibilidades)

Ejemplo

English: You just had dinner. Youcan't be hungry.
Español: Acabas de comer. No puedes tener hambre.

En ingles para hablar del pasado se utiliza must have (done) y can't have (done)

Ejemplos

English: The phone rang, but I didn't hear it. I must have been asleep.
Español: El teléfono sonó pero no lo escuche. Debí haber estado durmiendo.

English: Tom walked into the wall. He can't/couldn't have been payingattention.
Español: Tom se dio contra la pared. No podía haber estado prestando atención.

Fórmula Presente
Afirmativa sujeto + must + verbo (infinitivo) He must be tired after working all day.
Negativa sujeto + can't + verbo (infinitivo) He can't be tired, he only worked for an hour.

Fórmula Pasado
Afirmativa sujeto + must + have + been + verbo (infinitivo) He must have been tired afterworking all day.
Negativa sujeto + can't/couln't + have + been + verbo (infinitivo) He can't/couldn't have been tired, he only worked for an hour.

Recuerda: En ingles must (have) y can't (have) también tienen otros significados.



Excepciones: Ninguna.





May (have) y might (have)



Regla facil:
En ingles se utiliza may o might para decir que algo es posible.Estudia estos ejemplos:


1) Presente

You are looking for Jack. Nobody knows for sure where he is, but you get some suggestions:

Español: Estas buscando a Jack. Nadie esta seguro de donde está, pero te dan algunas sugerencias:

Ingles: He may be in his office.
Español: Puede que este en su oficina.

Ingles: He might be having lunch.
Español: Puede que este comiendo.

Ingles:Ask Ann. She might know.
Español: Preguntale a Ann. Ella puede que sepa

2) Pasado

Ejemplos

Ingles: A: I can't find my bag anywhere.
B: You might have left it in the store.
Español: A: No puedo en contrar mi bolso en ninguna parte.
B: A lo mejor lo has dejado en la tienda.

Ingles: A: I wonder why Jill didn't come to the meeting.
B: She might not have known about it.Español: A: Me pregunto por qué Jill no vino a la reunion.
B: A lo mejor no sabia que habia.

Fórmula
Afirmativa sujeto + may/might + verbo (infinitivo) He may/might go to the meeting.
Negativa sujeto + may/might + not + verbo (infinitivo) He may/might not go to the meeting.

Recuerda: En ingles también se puede utilizar could en vez de may o might. Pero con could la posibilidad es menor.Exepciones: Ninguna.














May and might (futuro)

Regla facil:

En ingles utilizamos may y might para hablar de sucesos posibles en el futuro.

Estudia estos ejemplos:

1) Futuro

Ejemplos

Ingles: I'm not sure where to go on my vacation, but I may go to Puerto Rico.
Español: No estoy segura de donde ir en mis vacaciones, a lo mejor voy a PuertoRico.

Ingles: Ann may not come to the party tonight. She isn't feeling well.
Español: Puede que Ann no venga a la fiesta esta noche. No se siente bien.

2) Futuro continuo

Ingles: Don't call at 8:30. I may (or might) be watching the football game on TV.
Español: No llames a las 8:30. Puede que este mirando el partido de futbol en la tele.

2) May as well, might as well: En ingles seutilizan para decir que deberíamos hacer algo, pero solo porque no hay ninguna razón por la cual no hacerlo y porque no hay nada mejor que hacer.

Ingles: You'll have to wait an hour for the next bus, so you might as well walk.
Español: Tendras que esperar una hora hasta que pase el próximo autobús, así que más te vale caminar.


Ingles:
We may as well go to the party. We have nothing...
