La historia de la conquista del actual territorio mexicano comenzó realmente en 1517, cuando el navegante Francisco Hernández de Córdoba exploróla costa de la península de Yucatán. Aunque los mayas pasaban por una etapa de decadencia, sus ciudades y su organización impresionaron vivamente al explorador. Gravemente herido en un combate con los indígenas, éste regresó a Cuba con las noticias de lo que había visto.
El gobernador de Cuba, Diego Velázquez, pensó que podía beneficiarse con el descubrimiento hecho en Yucatán. Organizó unanueva expedición, bajo el mando de Juan de Grijalva y éste no sólo confirmó la información de Hernández de Córdoba, sino que cuando exploraba el actual territorio de Veracruz se enteró de que existía un rico imperio que dominaba la región y que era temido y odiado por otros pueblos indígenas.
