DISCUSSION BOARD ONE INITIAL THREAD Learned Hand’s Initial Thread In what ways do you see the presence or absence of soul care in your local church? I attend Capilla del Rey (Kings Chapel) in Miami, Florida. Our church has a membership of 200 conducting services in Spanish and wehave a bilingual youth ministry. Soul care within our pastoral ministry revolves around the “primary goal of spiritual life via human transformation” (Ortberg, 2002, 21). Benner states, “the overreaching goal of Christian soul care may be thought of as spiritual formation, the formation of the character of Christ within his people” (2003, 15). Our pastoral ministry team is responsible foradministration, leadership, teaching and community service and is led by our senior pastor Dr. Luis Angel Diaz Pabon. Our pastoral care team is led by our four small group leaders and their assistants. Their duties involve visiting the sick, intercessory prayer, nurturing the members of their small groups, leading and teaching the members of their small groups, and membership retention. Clinton note, “westep into others’ lives at their critical point of need to bear one another’s burdens” (Gal. 6:2), (2007, iv). I currently serve as the Pastor of the pastoral counseling ministry of our congregation. Our pastoral counseling ministry includes three components, clinical pastoral counseling services, education and training, and community outreach. The goal of our pastoral counseling ministry is toprovide comfort through awareness of God’s saving grace by sharing opportunities that will enhance the counselee’s spiritual growth (Benner, 2003, 40). We are experiencing growth as a direct result of our small group (pastoral care) and pastoral counseling ministries. In these economic challenging times we see a tremendous opportunity for reaching others for Christ and sharing his forgiveness.References Benner, David. 2003. 3FIRST CLASSMATE’S INITIAL THREAD Gregory Anderson’s Initial Thread Soul care is exercised by the New Hope Baptist Church by faithfully carrying out the purposes of the church. The purpose of our church is to bring people to Christ (Mk. 16:15Evangelism), to the church family (Matt. 28:19-Fellowship), and to spiritual maturity (Matt. 28:20-Discipleship) for the purpose of worshipping God (Acts2:46-47-Worship) and serving others (Acts 2:45-Ministry). The New Hope Baptist Church is very strong in the area of Christian friendship. Clinton states that “Christ –centered soul care means recognizing that the church, more than the hospital or clinic, is the central place for healing, growth, and rich relationship” (Clinton, 2002, p.31).
