A few centuries ago, when people began to believe that the world was round, thinkers debated whether there could possibly be aland in the southern hemisphere. When disputation gave way to exploration, Australia was discovered. Expanding knowledge, however, did not dispel the fabulous quality of the continent. To describeAustralia can be no more than an introduction to a nation-continent inhabited by fifteen million people. This description can give no more than glimpses of the nature of its land, the orientation ofits ancient land, the population, the complexity of its religion, the favorable conditions of its climate and the fascination of its unique wildlife.
The Australian continent was joined to SouthAmerica, Antarctica, Africa and India in a supercontinent known as Gondwanaland. The island continent is a meeting place of oceans. Its western shoreline is washed by the Indian Ocean, and its eastcoast by the Coral and Tasman Seas of the South Pacific. To the north the Timor and Arafura Seas lie between Australia and South-East Asia and Papua New Guinea. The Southern Ocean brings a taste ofAntarctic weather to the land(s southern edge. The coastline encloses a land area of 7, 682, 000 square kilometres. Canberra is Australia(s national capital which is situated south-west of Sidney andnorth-east of Melbourne, two of the most important cities of Australia.
In relation to the population, it could not muster two people to the square kilometre which makes Australia one of the mostsparsely populated countries in the world. Most Australians live near the coast. The only city of more than 100,000 people not located on the coast is Canberra. In the whole country there are only...
