The development of suspended ceiling systems in the early 1950s produced a shift in thinking about the function of a ceiling in construction. Where conventional ceilings had been regarded simply as a single-plane, fire-protective, finished element, the new suspended ceilings offered access toplumbing, electrical and mechanical components in overhead runs. Today’s suspended ceiling systems provide even more advantages for building construction, including a range of options for acoustical control, fire protection, lighting systems, HVAC, building technology systems and security networks. Vast selections of ceiling designs are available to achieve design considerations such as aestheticappearance, budget considerations, durability and functional requirements. Sustainability has also become a major design consideration. Development of today’s acoustical ceiling products involves careful selection of building materials, construction methods and design details to create ceilings that consume fewer natural resources to build, maintain and remain viable in the future. This chapterdefines the various types of acoustical ceiling tile and grid products as well as design considerations. Note that many different organizations provide information and recommended standards or tolerances for installing ceiling suspension systems and acoustical panel and tile products. See the Appendix (Agencies & Organizations, page 488) for more information. Suspended Acoustical Ceiling Products

Key components of suspended acoustical ceilings are the suspension grid and acoustical panels. The composition of each can vary depending on the end-use application. The tables within the next few pages describe various grid andtile products available. USG offers four primary grid systems. Each performs the same function of suspending panels from the overhead building structure. The systems differ in design, compatibility with certain styles of panels and the resulting appearance of the finished ceiling.
