Japan Weighs Restricting Access to Nuclear Exclusion Zone

Radioactive contaminants and other concerns might prompt Japan to tighten public access to the exclusion zone surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.Between 70,000 and 80,000 people previously inhabited the zone. 200 residences in the exclusion area might still be inhabited, but some people are living in their houses, Unnecessary exclusion zoneoccupants could contribute to the further spread of radioactive materials, possibly complicating future cleanup activities.
Significantly contaminated water in a passage linked to the plant's No. 2reactor turbine area has declined in depth by one centimeter since workers on Tuesday began transferring fluid to an improvised holding structure.
The French firm Areva intends by the end of next month toestablish an on-site system capable of removing nearly all radioactive contaminants from 50 metric tons of water each hour.
Meanwhile, white vapor was seen drifting from the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4reactors on Monday.
Two remote-controlled robotic vehicles on Sunday took radiation readings from the No. 1 and No. 3 reacors on Sunday. However, a Monday attempt to gather radiation readings at theNo. 2 reactor proved unsuccessful, vapor at the site obstructed one robot's camera view of measuring instrument mounted on the other vehicle.
Transfers of fresh water into reactors No. 1, No. 2 andNo. 3 continued, and workers continued the insertion of nitrogen gas into the No. 1 reactor, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Tuesday, referring to Japanese government updates.
