CRIME AND VIOLENCE
crime and violence, much of it fueled by transnational criminal activity, affect many parts of the country, including both urbanand rural areas. People who lived there should be remain alert and be aware of their surroundings at all times, particularly in the border region. In its efforts to combat violence, the Governmentof Mexico has deployed federal police and military troops to various parts of the country. Government checkpoints, often staffed by military personnel, have been erected in many parts of the country, especially, but not exclusively, in the border area. U.S. citizens are advised to cooperate with personnel at government checkpoints when traveling on Mexican highways because of the continual cycleof war with narcotrafic.

CRIME IN STREETS

The low rates of apprehension and conviction of criminals contribute to Mexico’s high crime rate. The homicide rates in parts of Mexico have risen sharply in recent years, driven largely by violence associated with transnational criminal organizations.
