Actualmente, el mundo se encuentra en un periodo de crisis energética, ya que dentro de algunos años, la producción mundial de petróleo convencional empezará a disminuir, al haber alcanzado actualmente el límite de producción, mientras la demanda mundial no deja de aumentar. 
El consumo de petróleo se cuantificó en el año 2004 en 82,5 millones de barriles al día (cada barrilcontiene 159 litros), constituyendo el 40% del consumo energético y de presentar un incremento anual de su consumo a escala mundial que se ha producido cada año en lo que va del siglo, siendo los EEUU el mayor contribuyente al haber incrementado su uso en un 20% en las últimas cuatro décadas. De ahí su continua atención sobre los conflictos del Oriente
