Es importante una variación textual para tratar de definir el auditorio al que Juan dirige su Evangelio. El tiempo presente (pisteu?te) tiene el apoyo de primera mano del Sinaítico, el Vaticano y probablementedel papiro Bodmer (66), en tanto que el aoristo (pisteus?te) tiene el apoyo de un corrector del Sinaítico, del Alejandrino, y de la mayoría de los otros manuscritos. Si se adopta el tiempo presente, el propósito de Juan es confirmar a los cristianos en su fe en Jesús como el Mesías e Hijo de Dios frente a las interpretaciones desviadas que surgían en la iglesia. El principal objetivo de Juan es,pues, una comprensión adecuada de Cristo. La cristología es básica para el libro, porque la vida eterna depende de una relación correcta con Cristo.
