These are typical indicators of classification for HNC written submissions. It is by no means an exhaustive list and should be combined withdebate between assessors.
Students are expected to demonstrate the following Learning Outcomes: LO1 – Understand the key developments in different genres of music LO2 – Understand a variety ofmusical genres LO3 – Understand the cultural contexts that musicians work within LO4 – Understand the effects of globalisation on music within a wider crosscultural context Assessors will be lookingspecifically for: 1. Knowledge of the musicians and tunes from the period chosen 2. How the social elements relate to the music of the time and its evolution, if applicable 3. Personal opinion must besubstantiated by facts wherever possible (And in research essays only, ie. not timed essay exams): 4. All sources must be cited properly using the standard Harvard referencing system [guidance availableonline or lccm02 Public folder]
FAIL (17-20) • Essay prompt not answered fully or work submitted is wholly off the mark • • • PASS • • • • • Logical shortcomings are clear Poor judgement is shown inargument or arguments are not substantiated properly with research Sources not cited
An ADEQUATE essay The overall argument feels tentative and lacks conviction Some topics are understood but havenot been drawn into a coherent whole Presentation is reasonable but required more care and preparation Some logical conclusions drawn but perhaps great leaps in logic are apparent There is littleimagination or independent thought in answering the essay prompt
