Critical
They made a criminal was directed by Busby Berkeley and starring John Garfield.
Claude Rains, Ann Sheridanand Gloria Dickson are part of the supporting cast although we can consider their roles as very important.
The cast overview was: John Garfield, played the part of the boxer; ClaudeRains as the Detective Phelan; Ann Sheridan and Gloria Dickson were the two consecutive lovers boxer.
Although the film did not win any award, it is a good sample of the well madeclassical cinema at the end of the 30s.
WHERE AND WHEN IT WAS SET
At the beginning the film is set in the New York of the 30s to introduce us in the society of those dayshowever, most of the film pass off in a farm in the middle of a field of palms. The interiors were filmed in studio, and the locations in the Palm Spring desert, in California (EE.UU).THE PLOT
The movie is about a boxer who is charged of murder the same night he wins the world championship.
He is unable of defence himself against the charges and, been thevictim of a dishonest solicitor (more interested in the boxer ´s money than in taking care of his innocence), he must undertake a getaway. He ends up in a farm where he falls in lovewith a good woman and remakes his life but a smart detective has been on his trail and finally finds the boxer´ s hideout; the policeman ends up understanding that the boxer is notguilty.
RECOMMENDING THE FILM
As I above mentioned this is a good sample of a classical movie and, although is not a masterpiece I would recommend it since it shows a goodcombination of the elements to filmmaking (editing, production design, screenplay, casting…) that results attractive to the lovers of the crime and sport genre or simply to entertain.
