ORIGIN OF THE TERM “HIP HOP”: Lovebug Starski, Keith Cowboy, and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as disco rap. It is believed that Cowboy created the term whileteasing a friend who had just joined the U.S. Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of soldiers marching. Hip hop is the combination of twoseparate slang terms—"hip", used in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as early as 1898, meaning current or in the now, and "hop", for the hopping movement.
Hip hop is a form of musicalexpression and artistic subculture that originated in the South Bronx - the black ghettos of New York, one of the poorest quarters, during the 1970s. Hip hop music first emerged with disc jockeys creatingrhythmic beats by looping breaks (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables, more commonly referred to as sampling. But the word "hip-hop" did not yet exist, it wasinvented a few years later, when already grown-up culture needed some overall title, by a legendary DJ (DJ), Africa Bambaataa.
Hip hop as music and culture formed during the 1970s when blockparties became increasingly popular in New York City, particularly among African American and Latino youth residing in the Bronx. Block parties incorporated DJs who played popular genres of music,especially funk and soul music. Due to the positive reception, DJs began isolating the percussion breaks of popular songs. This technique was then common in Jamaican dub music. Because the percussive breaks infunk, soul and disco records were generally short, DJ Kool Hercand other DJs began using such techniques with two turntables to extend the breaks.
