BIO-Conservación de Islas

Conservación de Islas is a Mexican non-for-profit organization dedicated to preventing extinctions and protecting insular species and habitats, backing as wellsustainable practices by local communities, and public policies. Based in Ensenada and La Paz, Conservación de Islas is integrated by more than 20 young, yet experienced professionals and specializedtechnicians, all of them very multifunctional, interdisciplinary, and resourceful. To develop its work, Conservación de Islas has a sustained and committed support from several Mexican government authorities,NGOs, local fishermen communities and, national and international donors. In addition, Conservación de Islas has cooperation agreements and collaboration relationships with IUCN’s Pacific InvasivesInitiative (PII); The University of Auckland, Department of Conservation and Landcare Research from New Zealand; Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities fromAustralia; TNC Central Caribbean and Environment Ministry from the Dominican Republic; Natural History Museum from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; UAM, UABC, CICESE, and CIBNOR from Mexico; among others.

In morethan a decade, more than 40 invasive mammal populations from almost 30 Mexican islands in Mexico have been removed by Conservación de Islas. This has lead to the protection of 147 endemic taxa —23mammals, 34 reptiles, 21 birds and 69 plants— as well as 227 seabird breeding colonies. An area of 50,742 hectares has been restored. Techniques have ranged from the traditional —trapping and groundhunting— for 26% of the restored area, to the most sophisticated —aerial hunting, aerial broadcast of bait, DGPS and GIS use— for 74% of the restored area. Also, the decree to protect Guadalupe Island as aBiosphere Reserve is a relevant contribution, same as the ongoing promotion to get the federal decree to legally protect all the other islands in the Pacific, off the Baja California Peninsula....
