EdgeCAM F1 in Schools Tutorial – machining the Solid Edge Tutorial car
Introduction
This tutorial will demonstrate how to load the car design into EdgeCAM and apply toolpaths to it. Using the car designed in the Solid Edge tutorial you will learn how to machine the right hand side of the car in EdgeCAM. Note: Copy chassis.par from the Solid Edge tutorial tothe EdgeCAM examples folder. The default location of the EdgeCAM Examples folder is: C:\Program Files\EdgeCAM F1 in Schools\Cam\Examples
Step 1. Run EdgeCAM
Run EdgeCAM by either
a) Selecting (double-click left hand mouse button) the EdgeCAM icon on the desktop of the PC or b) Selecting the EdgeCAM icon in the EdgeCAM F1 in Schools program group (Start, Programs, EdgeCAM F1 in Schools,EdgeCAM) The registration dialog will be displayed first. If your PC is set up with email please enter the following information: User Name Company Reseller Teacher’s name School name Denford
Select the Register Now button. If you do not have email set up on your PC, select the Register Later button. When the next dialog is displayed, select OK to start a new document.

Step 2. Load the Balsa wood stock
We are going to load an EdgeCAM model of the balsa wood stock from which the car will be machined.
On the Main toolbar, click the Open button. On the Open dialog box, select Balsa Stock.epf from the EdgeCAM examples folder. The default location of the EdgeCAM Examples folder is: C:\Program Files\EdgeCAM F1in Schools\Cam\Examples
Step 3. Insert your CAD model
We are now going to insert the F1 car into EdgeCAM. From the File menu, select the Insert Solid option On the Insert Solid File dialog box, select the Browse… button and the file chassis.par from the EdgeCAM examples folder. The default location of the EdgeCAM Examples folder is: C:\Program Files\EdgeCAM F1 in Schools\Cam\Examples You canoptionally select a colour for the car by selecting one from the colour list on this dialog (if no colour is selected, the car will be inserted in the default colour of grey) Select OK to insert the file.

Step 4. Position your CAD model in the stock
We are now going to position the F1 car inside the balsa stock.On the Main toolbar, click the Position the car icon This will automatically position the car inside the balsa stock.
Step 5. Machine the car
We are now going to add toolpaths for the machining of the car.
On the Main toolbar, click the Machine the car icon. The dialog displays the tooling and toolpath information for machining the car. There are 3 machining strategies to choose from,Raster in X, Raster in Y and Raster in X + Y. Choose your strategy. It is not recommended that you change any of the other settings.

a) Select the car
To select the car press the CTRL and A keys simultaneously. You will notice the colour of the car and flat surface changes when they areselected. Now select the right hand mouse button to confirm the selection.
b) Select the boundary
We need to select a boundary to contain the extents of the toolpath. To select the boundary, select the white shape that is located above the car Now select the right hand mouse button to confirm the selection and the toolpath will be generated.

Step 6. Save the file
We have now successfully machined the car so we will save the file under a new name. From the File menu, select the Save As option and in the File Name box enter the text Solid Edge Tutorial car machined and select the OK button
