Summary and Reaction

When I took a look at the responses I was surprised at how little people know about the deaf community or the answers that I got on some of the questions. One of them was thequestion about whether deaf people should be able to drive or not. I read that if a person is listening to loud music than they cant hear anything that’s going on around them but then deaf peoplehave grown up being alert of their surroundings and drive more carefully. Many of the responses reflect the perspectives that I had before taking this class. For example I had no idea what TTY was. Ijust though it was some thing cool to have on your phone. Also about Deaf Culture. I never had an idea that there was actually a Deaf Culture that existed. Also that the deaf community where offended ifa famous deaf person tried talking to the public like on TV as if he or she was trying to fit in with everybody else and didn’t have deaf pride. Other thing is that deaf people can now watch TV withsubtitles. It must’ve been hard for them not to be able to watch the news but also they could spend time together as a family. I was surprised to know that if a child was born deaf than as they grewup they would be very lucky to have parents who knew sign language. Other responses that reflected my own perspective now are about Sign Language. It’s really cool to learn this language and be ableto communicate with a whole new community of people. I also think that deaf people should decide to whether go to a public school or the residential school. Going to the residential school would helpthem with communication and also to be with other deaf kids their age. It would also help them if all the kid’s parents learned sign language. I was surprised from the responses that for the lastthree questions almost all the respondents said no but before taking this class I would’ve responded the same.
