Dances with wolves
It all starts with Lt. Dunbar at a hospital were after seeing other soldiers with their legs amputated, leaves and in a attempt of suicide he gets on a horse and decides to ride it across St. David Field between the opposing Union and the Confederates, where they try to kill him with no success which made the Union soldiers rally against the Confederates which makes them winthe battle. The coronel who was watching for far distance was impressed by his action, and sends his ambulance and his surgeon to care for him. After Dunbar’s recovers he is given Cisco (the horse he ride across St David field) and also given the choice to pick which station he wanted to be transferred. He requested to be transfer to the west frontier where he meets Major Fambrough who sends him toFort Cedric. He is taken there by a man named Timmons.
When they arrive the place is completely deserter and Dunbar’s first impression was that it was all he ever imagined of the country and that he couldn’t imagine a better place on earth. He also thinks of the place to be in poor condition, for which he has decided to assign himself cleaning duties for the next morning.
Thirty days havepassed and no one has arrived, beside the company of Cisco and a wolf that he names two socks.
After a couple days he encounters an Indian for the first time, who when approached by Dunbar runs away very frighten.
That night Kicking Bird, the Indian who encounter Dunbar, and the other Indians talk about white people. They think they are bad at riding horses, dirty and in general a poor race.
LtDunbar tired of waiting decides to go down and visit the Indians, on his way there he encounters a young woman who has tried to kill herself after her husband’s been killed by white men. When he tries to help her, she is very scared and when Dunbar is finally able to reach on to her, she passes out. He decides to take her to the Indians, and when arriving he scares a woman who start yelling to theother people, alerting them of his arrival. Once he gets off his horse and approaches them with the girl in his arms and tells them she is hurts. Kicking Bird, consider a holy man among the tribe starts yelling at him that he is not welcome and after pulling the girl off his arms asks him to leave and so he does. After Dunbar’s visit, the Indians decide to visit him the next morning. This is thebeginning of their relationship and trust.
When the Indians arrive to see Dunbar, he welcomes them and invites to sit. They try to communicate, Dunbar tries to ask them if they have seen any buffalos, or “tutunka” as the Indian called it. On the second visit, Dunbar shows the Indians a coffee grinder and how it works, as well as inviting them to try it with some sugar, which they very much like.Kicking Bird asked Stands with a Fist (girl rescued Dunbar), to try to remember the “white words” so that they can communicate with Dunbar and ask him about why he is there and also to know how many other white man will be coming. She says she can’t do so, that she is very scared that he will take her away and kill her. Kicking bird became part of the Sioux tribe when she was a child. She waspart of a white family who was murder by the Pawnees. She manages to escape and was adopted by the Sioux tribe and grew up as part of it. She plays a very important roll later on since thanks to her knowing “white words” the Sioux tribe was able to communicate better with Lt Dunbar.
Lt. Dunbar is visited by the Indians who ask him if he has seen buffalos, to which he responds that he hasn’t.They give him a buffalo hive, and he tries to thank them by asking them if they are hungry they respond no. That night he writes in his diary “Nothing that I was told about this people is correct. They are not beggars and are not thieves, there not the boogey monster or the demon they were made out to be, on the contrary they are polite and have a familiar sense of humor I enjoy.
