Dea Loher was born in 1964 in Traunstein. She studied German Language and Literature as well as Philosophy in Munich until 1988, after which she travelled to South American for the first time,where she has lived and worked since that time. In 1990 she attended the course »Szenisches Schreiben« (scenic writing), given by Heiner Müller and Yaak Karsunke at the Berlin University of the Arts.Her first play, »Olgas Raum« (tr: Olga's Room) premièred at the Hamburg Ernst-Deutscher-Theater in 1991. It was followed by »Tätowierung« (1992, tr: Tattoo), »Leviathan« (1993), »Fremdes Haus« (1995,tr: Strange House), »Blaubart« (1997, tr: Bluebeard) and »Adam Geist« (1998, tr: Adam's Ghost), and Dea Loherwas soon counted amongst the most-performed and most prolific young German writers for thetheatre. Her plays build on the tradition of dramatising history, without heeding a political programme. Her stylistic principle is rather »the propagation of discourse as a response to the questionposed by political theatre« (»Theater heute«). Her plays always have contemporary settings and make visible the most elementary human experiences. Since 1995 she has enjoyed a close artisticcollaboration with the director Andreas Kriegenburg, who staged her later plays. DeaLoher's theatrical work has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Else Lasker-Schüler-Preis-Prize, the Mülheimer Prizefor Drama and the Bertolt-Brecht-Prize.
