Abstract

This paper, examined the impact thatinformation technology would have on the landscape of soccer, specifically goal line technology. Ever since video replays have been used when soccer is being digitally transmitted, there have been major outbursts against FIFA to introduce the technology into the game in order to avert bad calls and increase the integrity of the game. Many other major professional sports (NBA, NFL, Tennis) are anexample of how feasible this proposition is due to today’s modern digital world. However, many others, especially the IFAB (International Football Association Board) argue that infusing technology into the sport would only ruin the simplicity and human feel of the game, which is the reason the game is so popular. In addition it would increase the inequality of the game, aiding the richer countriesand hindering the poorer ones. This lead to the research question: What impact would implementing the Information Technology of goal line technology, such as Hawkeye, into FIFA matches have on the game of soccer?

This paper focused mainly in analyzing the positive and negative impacts that this technology would have on the sport as well as the feasibility of actually implementing thetechnology. This was done through extensive secondary research and an experimental survey taken in Mexico City to get opinions about the debate and come to a conclusion.

This essay concluded that the inclusion of goal line technology was a very feasible proposal and would impact the sport in a mainly positive way as long as only the goal line technology was used, and it was only used in unclearsituations. In addition the technology should be working at a 99% reliable fashion in order to avoid glitches and errors in the system.

Controversial calls at this stage could only be seen when they happened and people discussed them but that was the end of it. Suddenly, from the mid 20th centuryonwards, IT (Information Technology) started to develop dramatically and people could see the games through the magic of televisions. Along with this came the introduction of instant replay, sports like the NFL and the NBA started to use this technology to help the referee’s decisions for difficult plays.
