It is a country known for its environmental consciousness. Mostly Germans consider anthropogenic causes are a major factor in global warming and are almost unanimous in thinkingthat the action is necessary, but are more divided than people from other countries on the urgency of such action. It is committed to the Kyoto protocol and several othertreaties promoting biodiversity, low emission standards, recycling, use of renewable energy, and supports sustainable development worldwide. However, the country has one of the carbondioxide emissions per capita highest in the European Union.
Emissions from burning coal and utility industries contribute to air pollution. Acid rain as a result of the sulfurdioxide emissions is damaging forests. The sewage pollution in the Baltic Sea and industrial effluents from rivers in former East Germany have been reduced. The government offormer Chancellor Schroeder announced plans to end the use of nuclear energy to produce electricity.
