Trabajos de codificación anteriores a Justiniano

A las reglas de derecho clásico desarrolladas en los escritos de los jurisconsultos, las constituciones imperiales, cuyonúmero iba continuamente en aumento, añadían sin cesar reglas nuevas. Formaban toda una legislación, que designaban con el nombre de leges, por oposición al jus, es decir, al derecho procedente de todas otras fuentes. Bien pronto se hizo sentir la necesidad de reunirlas para hacer colecciones. Estos trabajos están destinados a clasificar las constituciones y las otras partes del derecho,llevándolas con mayor facilidad a conocimiento del público, que ante todo distingue este periodo.
