Grace Ho, mother of Bruce, Sino-German descent [citation needed], put his boy named Lee Jun Fan, which means Protector of San Francisco, but during the first month was called the Little Phoenix, which in Chinese is a feminine name. Thereby intended to confuse evil spirits who steal from the first male after dark. MaryGlover was the nurse who gave it its English name, Bruce, whose existence he did not know until twelve years later when entering a Catholic school, La Salle in Hong Kong. His mother was Catholic.

The Kid is the only film inwhich he worked with his father, but curiously does not involve the two in any scenes together.
During his childhood, or rather his teens, Bruce was a gang member, was engaged in fighting with other gangs, carrying guns, chains. William proposed to him to learn Wing Chun andBruce agreed. Bruce's behavior when he first entered the academy of Yip Man was not all that should have been respectful, especially for a boy East, so Yip Man decided that Bruce was not able to learn an art as Wing Chun, and so notified by William Cheung. Bruce decided to return the next day with humility and respect, and Yip Man gave him a chance. [Citation needed]
Bruce was three to four yearslearning Wing Chun under the tutelage of Yip Man, though it was the hand of his pupil and learned Wong Shun Leung. Bruce was enrolled in the English school in San Francisco, at that time had interscholastic tournaments because they were English schools, where tournaments were held Western boxing. Bruce decided to take part in one of them, held in the college of St. George, and won using knowntechniques, Wing Chun. [Citation needed]
Return to United States on the age of eighteen he left Hong Kong to move to their country of birth, United States, and claim their nationality. Some versions say that Bruce's father was forced to make this decision because he feared that his son eventually joined the Chinese mafia, Chinese Triad. Thus, Bruce embarked on 3 December 1958 on the freighter DaisyMay, a 3rd class ticket and $ 100. [Citation needed]
The first city he visited was San Francisco, the city of his birth and where he was to claim his nationality. His father, Lee Hoi Chuen, contacted some relatives to Bruce could stay a while and in return Bruce had to work.
