Grand Funder Help to Growth

Our program, Hispanic Women in Action, is applying for grant funds from your organization in response to your invitation for proposals. This program is committed to prevent Hispanic women from dying of breast cancer because of lacking information, health insurance or because of cultural barriers and fear for their legal status. Besides thepreventive services that our program offers, to change attitudes and behaviors toward this mortal illness within this vulnerable group, it also forms an important bridge between the Hispanic women’s community in Orange County and the local agencies that provide free clinical breast exams and mammograms.
These collaborations with agencies in Orange County that fight against breast cancer arecritical in decreasing the number of Hispanic women to be diagnosed of breast cancer or who die from this disease. By participating in our program, women will gain awareness about breast cancer and will seek care before the illness arises.
Our executive director has given approval to apply for this grant opportunity in order to continue offering our services to Hispanic women in Orange County. Ifyou have any questions or concerns regarding our proposal, please feel free to contact us by phone at (714) 456-6789 or e-mail us at mrodriguez@hispanicwomeninaction.org. We will be glad to respond to your questions.

Sincerely

Rocio Jauregui Martha Rodriguez Perez

NEEDS STATEMENT

A. THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM

DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM:
Breast cancer is considered to be among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women in the United Statespopulation compared with other types of cancers (www.CDS.gov). In the United States in 2007 (the most recent year for which statistics are available), 202,964 women were told they had breast cancer, and 40,598 women died from it.
Research has found that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and cause of death from cancer among Hispanic/Latina women in this country. The Hispanicpopulation includes Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Central Americans (Nicaraguans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, Panamanians, Costa Ricans). According to ….in 2010, the estimated incidence of breast cancer was 90.2 per 100,000 Hispanic/Latina women) and the estimated mortality is 15.5 per 100,000 women.
The graphs 1 and 2 show how many women out of 100,000 got breast cancer in 2007; this iscalled the incidence rate. The graph also shows how many women out of 100,000 died from breast cancer in 2007; this is called the death rate. The breast cancer incidence and death rates are grouped by race and ethnicity.
