Health diseases of obesity in Mexico
In 2012, Mexico ranked fourth in childhood obesity, behindGreece, USA and Italy. 70% of the adult population in our country is overweight. In Mexico obesity has affected more women and that 34% are overweight compared to men who are 24.2% of the population. Todaywe are in second place in the countries with the highest rate of obesity in the population with 30%. Again passed by the United States of America with 33.8%, according to data released by theOrganization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Obesity and overweight are defined as abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health, according to the World HealthOrganization (WHO), overweight is defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) or greater than 25, and obesity as a BMI equal to or greater than 30.
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by the square of height inmeters, is an indicator that is frequently used to identify overweight and obesity. In Mexico alone, obesity contributes to a number close to 200,000 deaths per year, to be an important risk factor fordeveloping chronic degenerative diseases, such as type two diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular and hypertensive .
