Characterization – This disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident thatoccurred on 26 April 1986 which released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere which spread all over the USSR & Europe.

Hypotheses – On 26 April 1986, reactor four of thenuclear plant suffered a catastrophic power increase leading to explosion in its core which dispersed large quantities of radioactive fuel and core materials into the atmosphere.

Predictions – Thedisaster began during a systems test on 26 April at reactor number four of the plant, there was a sudden and unexpected power surge, and when an emergency shutdown was attempted, an exponentiallylarger spike in power output occurred which led to a reactor vessel rupture and a series of steam explosion, these events exposed the graphite moderator of the reactor to air causing it to ignite.Experiments - The experimental procedure was intended to run as follows:

1. The reactor was to be running at a low power level, between 700 MW and 800 MW.
2. The steam-turbine generator was to berun up to full speed.
3. When these conditions were achieved, the steam supply for the turbine generator was to be closed off.
