Australia
Is a Island, country, continent… Australia is a big whichever way you spin it. The essence of the place is diversity: deserts, coral reefs, tall forests, snow-cloaked mountains andmulticultural melting-pot cities, are the largest island in the world and, in turn, the smallest continent.
Australia is also the only continent ruled as one country. Sometimes informally as a continentis called "island" surrounded by oceans.
Weather
The southern third of the country has cold (though generally not freezing) winters (June to August). Tasmania and the alpine country in Victoria andNSW get particularly chilly. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are transition months, much the same as in Europe and North America
The Dry lasts roughly from April toSeptember, and the Wet from October to March; the build-up to the Wet (from early October) is when the humidity is at its highest and when the locals confess to being at their most irritable. The centre ofthe country is arid – hot and dry during the day, but often bitterly cold at night.
When it's cold down south, it's magnificent in the north and the Centre; when it's too hot and sweaty up north,the southern states are at their natural finest.
Flora and fauna
It is estimated that there are approximately 27,700 species of plants in Australia, including living fossils such as the cycadtree and grass and colorful wildflowers as waratah, swainsonas Formosan, banksia and kangaroo paws.
We also have about 2800 species of eucalyptus and acacia species 1000. The golden wattle flower isthe national emblem of Australia. Eucalypts comprise almost 80% of our forests. The other 20% is made up of acacia, melaleuca (tea tree), casuarinas, Callitris (cypress pine), mangroves and rainforests.Our unique animals are one of several reasons why people visit our country.
