“Dia de los Muertos” in Ecuador

The “Dia de los Muertos” in Ecuador is an interesting date thatis a combination between indigenous beliefs and Catholic religion. In Ecuador the holiday is interpreted as a day to “catch up” with the ones who are nolonger with us but have a life in a different world. People pack lunches of traditional food, flowers and offerings and head for the cemeteries where they spendthe day as a family talking, eating and performing routine maintenance on the grave site. The staple food of the season is the famous “colada morada”, a thickpurple drink; and “guaguas de pan”, sweet bread in shape of dolls. Weeks before the holiday supermarkets and bakeries begin selling the ingredients andstore-made versions of the drink and breads. “Colada morada” is made out of black corn flour, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, cinnamon, and pineapple, among other ingredients that are cooked together and served hot or cold with the sweet bread. Some families spend all the day together to perform every detail forthat day. The old people make the “colada morada” and the bread dough while the rest of the family is making their own “guagua de pan”. This part of thecelebration is very funny and kind, however, when all is ready and is time to remember the persons who are not with us, is a very sad moment. In brief the “Dia delos Muertos” is traditional and popular celebration in Ecuador that consist in spend the day in family remembering the people who are not more with us.
