OmniPod Insulin Management System Wins Medical Design Excellence Award

Insulet Corporation today announced that its OmniPod Insulin Management System hasreceived a 2006 Medical Design Excellence Award. The OmniPod Insulin Management System is an innovative new product for the treatment of diabetes that brings together safe, reliable, continuoussubcutaneous insulin infusion and blood glucose monitoring in an easy-to-use, two-part system.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition is organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC (LosAngeles) and is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineeringfeatures, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices, and features that provide enhanced benefitsto the patient. The award also recognizes the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so the product meets its clinical objectives.

Designers of theOmniPod System used innovative design and materials and overcame a number of technological challenges to create a system that has all the functionality of a conventional insulin pump with no tubing.Conventional insulin pumps are complex electromechanical devices that have hundreds of components and are connected to the body via an infusion set with up to 42 inches of tubing. With the OmniPodInsulin Management System, Insulet's design team was able to separate the controls and user interface from the insulin delivery mechanism, eliminating the need for tubing.
