Diamonds are one of the most precious jewels, some of them are value in millions of dollars, depend on the shape, colour and cutting.
Diamonds can be use in jewellery andindustry, but at any of these, the diamonds industry is a big one, it employs a lot of people and the jewelry sales continue growing every year.
Diamonds also are used to express emotions. Theyrepresent love and commitment. They are part of celebrations such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries. Also they represent power and money because just wealthy people can afford one.
Diamonds arefound in many countries around the world but the major producers of them are countries in Africa like Angola, Botswana, Republic of Congo, Namibia and South Africa, also in Canada and Russia.
Howeverthere is a dark side about diamonds which concerns to the international organizations like UN and Human Rights Watch. The main issue is that almost all the countries in Africa that extract and producediamonds have a serious political, social and economic crisis and some of them have a civil war.
These countries use the diamond sales to finance conflicts and also to exploit persons because of thestrenuous mine conditions.
These kind of diamonds are named “Conflicts Diamonds” or Blood Diamonds, they often are sold in secret to other nations who claim their legitimacy.
However to prevent thispractice there is an important organization who strive to ensure fair and safe trade in the diamonds industry. It is the World Diamond Council (WDC) that represents around 50 organizations, from miningcompanies and trade associations to manufacturers and retailers – worldwide. It was founded in 2000, its main purpose is try to eradicated “Conflicts Diamonds”.
They also implement the KimberleyProcess which is a certificate system to avoid that conflicts diamonds be sold in the market and to ensure customers their purchases.
