The New York Department of education voted on 20 high schools to be closed down; someof these schools were Jamaica High School in Queens, Kenedy High Schools in Bronx, Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn. These high schools were selected to be closed because of their continuistacademic reputation. Large high schools do not work as a benefit for kids in New York City according to Joel Klein ‘If a aschool is not organized properly it is likely to fail”.
Acording to Javier C.Hernandez The New York Times article’SAuccess at Small Schools has a Price, our Report says’ from 2002-2009 the city has closed down more than 24 large and “ replaced with smaller schools which aresupposed to foster more intimate relationship and higher student achievement.’ Many feel that when high at risk student are transferred to small schools they worsen the small school that theyr’ein.However,there are less students in small schools therefore, teachers will be able to provide their high at risk students with extra help.
Justin Martinez is a 9th grader at Bayard Rustin High School, hewas 1/2000 students.He claimed his school being to small for the amount in the school, his hallways were always packed .He also said that there were not enough chairs for every student in the classroomtherefore some students had to stand,sit in the floor,or sit in the corner of the teachers desk.It came to the point where the teachers weren’t even aware if the students were understanding or not.Justin Martinez’s school had a 50% graduation rate.
