1) This law is so controversial because it doesn’t take into account Muslims’ beliefs. Islamic people think that women have to cover their faces so that men cannot look at them.2) This law can be discriminatory in the sense that Italian citizens don’t respect or accept Islamic people’s culture .Hence; Muslims are treated in an unfair way because of their tradition that isdifferent.

3) This measure affects women who cover their faces near public places such as schools, hospitals or post offices. These are considered to be sensitive because the people who are therecan feel annoyed or upset after seeing ladies wearing veils.

4) In my opinion, the purpose of including this quote is that Italian authorities want to convince readers that they are in favourof cultural integration. Officials do not want to be considered as prejudiced people.




5) a) A stronghold of the anti –immigration Northern League: stronghold is a noun .It means that mostpeople from Novara are opposed to immigration, they share the same attitude.

b) Hefty: This is an adjective and it means large.


c) “Have sparked protests from….” to spark is a verb andit means to lead to, to bring about.


d) “face –covering veils demeaned women: This sentence means that women wearing veils on their faces are not respected.
