ABSTRACT
This report is intended to describe the use of the updated method of design developed by
the authors at the Institute of Engineering, UNAM.
The theory is consistent with the general concepts presented in 1974 in the technical report
325 of the Institute’s of Engineering Series. The report was carefully analyzed in terms of
the extensiveinformation obtained in test roads, typical highways in the national network,
and full-scale testing in the circular test-track at the Institute.
Extensive research has been made up to date, which confirms the basic assumptions of the
design method:
•
Mechanistic approach for the two main modes of failure of pavements, which include:
A rigid plastic model and Terzaghi´s load bearingcapacity criteria, to estimate the
long-term permanent deformation of the unbound pavement layers. The theoreticalempirical model is consistent with the full-scale experimentation.
An elastic model to determine the road performance, based on the fatigue cracking
failure of the asphalt bound layers, taking into account the critical tension strain on
those layers.
•
A probabilistic approach...
