7. What would happen if Patty did not control her diabetes? Would her blood sugar levels go up or down? Explain.
If Patty did not control her diabetes her blood sugarwould more than likely fluctuate between high and low depending on her sugar intake and insulin regulation. To elaborate, if Patty’s body had too much sugar and notenough insulin her blood sugar would go up leading to hyperglycemia. On the other hand if Patty’s insulin intake was greater than that of her sugar intake, this would lead toa condition known as hypoglycemia. Either one of these conditions can be severely dangerous to the health of a person with diabetes. In fact both of these conditions canlead to unconsciousness and seizures which in turn can lead to the potential for brain damage to the diabetic patient.

8. Patty and her family always carry insulin andglucose pills. What immediate action did Patty’s father take? What would insulin do to the blood sugar level? What would glucose do to the blood sugar level?
Patty’sfather more than likely administered one glucose pill to patty to raise her blood sugar and possibly one more depending on the dosage to which she is prescribed. Ifinsulin had been administered to patty while her blood sugar was so low it would lower her blood sugar even further because it will in the short term will cause glucose to betaken up by the muscle and adipose tissue. Therefore glucose will be continued to be used up and would result in severe hypoglycemia and could lead to seizures and braindamage if not treated appropriately. In turn, if glucose was administered, if not in excess, would balance out her insulin/glucose and she would return to her normal state.
