THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), well known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain is noted for his novelsAdventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), which has been called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, andEuropean royalty. Twain was very popular, and his keen wit and incisive satire earned praise from critics and peers. Upon his death he was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and WilliamFaulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".

The imaginative and mischievous twelve-year-old boyThomas Sawyer lived with his Aunt Polly. He persuades other children in the neighborhood to do jobs for him. Tom falls in love with Rebecca "Becky" Thatcher, and persuades her to get "engaged" to him.Tom accompanies Huckleberry Finn, they witness the murder of young Dr. Robinson by Injun Joe. Tom, Huck and their friend Joe Harper run away to an island on the Mississippi, in order to "becomepirates." But their return is met with great rejoicing, and they become the envy and admiration of all their friends.
Then Muff Potter's trial begins, and Tom, overcome by guilt, testifies against Injun Joe.Tom goes on a picnic to McDougal's Cave with Becky and their classmates; the two get separated from the others and soon become lost in the cave, but eventually find a way out. Tom has found and theyunearth the box of gold, the proceeds of which are invested for them. Injun Joe is found just inside the main entrance, having died of starvation while trying to break through its door. The WidowDouglas adopts Huck, and, when Huck attempts to escape civilized life, Tom promises him that if he returns to the widow, he can join Tom's robber band. Reluctantly, Huck agrees.
