Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528)
It is one of the most outstanding artists in the Renaissance outside Italy, known by its superiority and integration of text and images in engraving.
His father,Albrecht Atjós, of Hungarian origin, was a goldsmith. He moved to Nuremberg, one of the most important centers of Germany, in 1455. In 1467, he married Holpere Barbara and they had 18 children over 24years, in 1524 only three survived. Highlighting Albrecht, the second one, born in 1471. On summer of 1494, Durer got married, according to a previous arrangement, to Agnes Frey, daughter of alocal merchant. The fall of 1494, he left his wife at Nuremberg and traveled to Venice, Italy. Later, in 1495 returned to Nuremberg and worked there for about 10 years, producing most of his notableprints. Later, in 1505, visited Italy for the second time, and started painting for a while. Durer went back to Nuremberg by summer of 1507 and stayed in Germany until 1520. Started studying the theoryof proportion. Also, he mastered perspective through his studies of geometry and mathematics. His reputation spread all over Europe and, since then, more artists also started studying and applyingperspective to ther respective art works.
We see Albrecht Durer's Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, (from the Apocalypse series. c. 1497–98. Woodcut, approx. 15 5⁄8" x 11". The British Museum,London.) and we can appreciate so much amazing detail, detail that gives Durer his well deserved reputation. With woodcut, the artist draws, in this case with pen and ink, and create the differenttones that will be transfered to the wood block by a skilled carver, and then, the reproduced image will become the final art work. What we see here is a typical Renaissance-era art work, withreligious theme and purpose. In this case, the practical function was to provide visual references to the Book of Revelation and reach a larger audience. Audience that helped Durer make his fortune.
