Easter is the Christian celebration that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The date of celebration varies from 22 March to 25 April, as it takes place the Sundayfollowing the first full moon of spring. There is a formula that allows calculation of the date of Easter, a calculation originally performed by the Church of Alexandria and was later adoptedthroughout Europe. However, because the dispute arose centuries after calendar used by the Catholic Church (Gregorian calendar) and the Eastern Churches (Julian calendar), the date of Easter varies for eachchurch, and only rarely achieved coincide exactly as shown in the table.
The first Christians were Jews celebrated Easter at the same chronological Passover. But since the First Council of Nicea (in325) separated Christians the celebration of the Christian Passover, Jews removing elements. But they left the mobile nature of the party noting that Christ was resurrected on Passover. Today theCatholic Church maintains the mobile nature of the date of Easter.
United States & Canada
In the United States, Easter Sunday is a flag day but has not been a federal and state holiday due to fallingon a Sunday, which is already a non-working day for federal and state employees. However, nearly every retail store, shopping malls and some restaurants are closed on Easter Sunday. Few banks that arenormally open on regular Sundays are closed on Easter. Two days before Easter Sunday, on Good Friday, is a holiday in 12 states. Most private businesses and sectors, as well as financial and stockmarket, and public schools are closed on Good Friday. Historically, schools have given extended spring breaks of one to two weeks around the Easter holiday, but this practice has been declining in favorof fixed one-week recesses around Washington's Birthday and in late April.
