This is a book written by Elizabeth Gilbert, it’s an autobiographic story about the end of her first marriage, her struggle with depression, and the beginning of her new life.
The book starts when Elizabeth finds herself lost, she doesn’t wanna be a mother or a wife, she doesn´t wanna keep living in her marriage.She spends months trying to convince herself that a divorce isn’t the right choice, she decides to start praying while she is lying on the bathroom floor crying in the middle of the night. She asks to God for help with her situation and suddenly she receives calm, she hears a voice inside of her saying that for that moment all that she needed to do was come back to bed. She takes the decision of adivorce a few months later.
Her husband puts all the guilt oh their failed marriage on her, and makes the divorce difficult by asking a lot of money and all the properties the owned, Elizabeth gives everything to him because she just wants to be free again.
Weeks later she meets a guy named David, they fall in love really fast, David was a man who practiced yoga and Elizabeth becomes involved inthat really fast too. They start to have problems and she finds herself crying again, and in big depression. The relationship keeps going on and off, she starts taking medication.
To feel better Elizabeth buys an Italian dictionary, she spends her afternoons in her bathtub reading Italian words. She remembers an old man she met years ago in Bali, this man was a healer and also could read peoplehands, when the met he told her that she would have two marriages, one long and one short, he also said that she was going to loose all her money, and that one day she was going to return to Bali to live with him and teach him English. She realizes that it was true, she lost all her money in the divorce.
She chooses to make a trip, traveling was her biggest passion. She receives money from a newbook she is planning to write. She decides to go to Italy, her dream country, to India, her praying country, and to Bali, to find peace and to teach that old man to read.
Eat
Elizabeth goes to Rome, she is going to stay there for three months. She rents a little room and starts walking every day around the city, she eats new food, she spends her days in little restaurants reading the newspaper and trying to translate it. She starts going to an academy of Italian but realizes that she rathers spend her time outside eating an seeing people than instead of inside a classroom all day.
One day she sees a message of a guy in the newspaper saying that he needed an American person to practice his English with, she calls him and the become friends, she meets a lot of other people in Rome.She sees a lot of couples in Rome and starts to miss David, but she knows the right thing for both of them is to stay away. Her friends tell her of how every city has a word that describes it perfectly, and how the word for Rome is “sex”. She realizes she doesn’t need sex or a man in her life. She chooses her own word “atraverssiamo” that means “crossing over”. She also discovers a famousItalian phrase “ Dolce far niente” wich means “the sweetness of doing nothing”, she puts it in practice and spends the time she had left in Rome eating, and traveling. She feels happy again.
Pray
She is India, every thing there is so different from Italy. She starts loosing all the weight she gain in Rome eating pasta. She is staying in an Ashram temple, a perfect place ment for people who wantedto pray, do yoga, and find God.
She starts having trouble with meditation, her mind its too busy thinking of other things instead of just relaxing and feel the energy. She meets a man from Texas that starts to help her with her praying, after hard work she finally feels absolute calmness in her mind and she is able to meditate and feel Gods presence. She meets and Indian girl, they become...
