EBay history
When people talk about online auctions, they are definitely talking about eBay. EBay is the world’s leader in the online auction industry. Paperclips, DVDs, collectibles, computers,even brand new cars, are few of the many things eBay has to offer. Almost anything you can imagine you will find it on eBay. Their slogan says it all; What ever IT is you can get it on eBay (eBay.com).All of these items are divided by categories and any person that owns and account can bid on them. Now eBay has more than 168 million users around the world.
The company started out in 1995 fromidea of Pierre Omidyar. The idea was to have a site with the appearance of an online garage sale. The company’s first name was Echo Bay Technology but because of domain troubles they shortened the nameto eBay. EBay's mission is to provide a global trading platform where practically anyone can trade practically anything (eBay.com). But because of the freeness which everybody trade item, it wasnecessary to create an environment of trust between the users. That is why eBay is so unique and successful, because they were able to make the user trust on the process.
In 1998 eBay went public and hadan initial public stock offering with an initial price of $18 per share. Since then, the company has gone straight up with revenues over $3.2 billion for 2004 and $4 billion for 2005. The actual stockprice is $34 and it has been around that price for the last 2 years (finance.yahoo.com).
Many acquisitions have been made by eBay in the last few years. One of the biggest acquisitions from eBay wasPaypal Inc. for $1.5 billion. Paypal is eBay’s preferred payment system (Mullen). Like Paypal, many other companies are now owned by eBay.
