Se convirtió en la colonia francesa más rica en el mundo en el siglo 18 después del tratado de ryswick 1967. Sus productos principales eran el azuzar exportados: Mangos ,azúcar ,café,indigo,algodón y cacao.La venta del azúcar nunca retorno a los niveles pre independencia. Era la colonia azucarera más importante en la región.
-La industria mineraocupa un lugar muy pequeño siendo su principal
*80% vive en pobreza. 49% circunda el nivel de analfabetismo.
- distribución de la fuerza laboral 66% aunque solo representa una cuarta parte del GDP .agrícola,25% servicios,9% industrial.
Carecen de fuentes de hidrocarburos por lo que la economía es dependiente en importar petróleo.
El 1% posee casi la mitad de las riquezas del país
30-40% delpresupuesto está compuesto por ayudas foráneas.
2/3 partes de la economía dependen del cultivo agrícola de subsistencia.{lo justo para vivir} pero eso solo es 30% del GDP.
Trade deficit- se exporta mucho más de lo que se importa.
LA deuda externa de haiti se ha cancelado en el 2009 debido a que el World Bank decreto que llenan las condiciones para el programa HIPC heavily indebted poor countriesLas remesas son ¼ parte del GDP y la fuente primaria de intercambio con el exterior.Contribuyen entre 1.5 y 1.8 billones eso es más de lo que recibe Haiti en ayudas foráneas.
Deforestación.- Cerca del 98% de las ares verdes {originales} han desaparecido debido a la tala de arboles para producir carbono vegetal{charcoal} para estufas y otras necesidades.
El sector agrícola le da empleo a 65%de la población.
El Plan EERP solamente asigna un 1% de estos fondos a los gramjeros.

According to a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) undertaken by the World Bank, UN, European Commission (EC), and Inter-AmericanDevelopment Bank (IDB), the total value of damage and losses caused by the January 12, 2010 earthquake is estimated at U.S. $7.863 billion, which is the equivalent of more than 120% of Haiti’s 2009 GDP. Most damage and losses were experienced by the private sector ($5.5 billion, or 70%), while the public sector impact was $2.4 billion (or 30% of the total). The value of destroyed physicalassets--including housing units, schools, hospitals, buildings, roads and bridges, ports, and airports--was estimated at $4.302 billion (55% of the total effects of the disaster). Economic losses (loss of production, reduction in turnover, loss of employment and salaries, increased costs of production, etc.) reached $3.561 billion (the equivalent of 45% of the total). Housing is the sector most affectedby the earthquake, with damages estimated at about $2.3 billion. The other sectors, in decreasing order of magnitude in terms of the impact sustained, are trade (damage and losses of $639 million, or 8% of the total), transport and government buildings ($595 million each), and education and health (with an average of 6% of the total).Stategov.
