Essay: due November 11th, choose any topic in contemporary IR, analyze it from the theories, two or three, that we have learned in this class, implications of this analysis. 2000words or so, 7 double spaced pages or so.
Major players, theories, past hundred years…
Adam, ethics, Int’l political economy, security, and US role in world.
Political economy is therelationship between governments and states and economics. We look at the tension between markets and states. Markets generally pursue economic wealth and we normally want to break down political barriers.Is this a symbiotic relationship? Sometimes we need rules, and property rights laws, in order to engage in transactions. States can also move markets in ways that advantage them.
Besidespolitical economy you have multinational corporations and international bodies i.e. the UN, the World Bank, and the IMF. We divide these studies into trade and finance.
Trade: movements of goods andservices from one state to another. What are the politics involved in international trade? The main issue is whether a government has free trade or taxed trade, or restricted trade.
Free trade: no realrestrictions in what is traded.
Protectionist trade policies: tax foreign products when the come in to your country.
Non-tariff barriers: quota system, which means that a country has a setnumber of imports it allows. Standards that are put up can also keep out certain products.
Theories
Liberalism: free trade is a good thing, it leads to peace, and free trade gives absolute gains?Perhaps because this is what liberalism normally seeks. Int’l trade makes everyone better off, “a rising tide lifts all boats.”
-The Invisible Hand: the market operates alone and functions well…?Wall Street, “Greed is Good.”
-Supply and demand will interact and take care of things… unfettered markets will have beneficial effects.
