La educación popular en Chile se manifiesta de manera germinal desde los procesos revolucionarios de la década de 1850, siendo las ideas ilustradas y positivistas las que manifiestan interés por lainstrucción del pueblo. De esta manera, existen esfuerzos por parte del Estado, la Iglesia, particulares y de organizaciones autónomas de artesanos. La investigación se centrará particularmente enesta última institución, específicamente, en la Sociedad de Artesanos de La Serena. La motivación del estudio se enfoca principalmente en ser un aporte a la historia regional y a las escasasinvestigaciones sobre el rol educador de estas sociedades. En este contexto, nuestro objetivo es evidenciar el rol educador y el carácter popular de la escuela de la Sociedad de Artesanos de La Serena, apartir del análisis de sus actas y la prensa de la época, utilizando como marco de referencia metodológico un análisis histórico documental.

ABSTRACT
Popular education in Chile began to germinate since the revolutionary processes during the decade of 1850,being the illustrated and positivists ideas the ones that showed interests for the people’s instruction. Furthermore, there are efforts on the part of the state, the church, private ones, and autonomousorganizations of artisans. This research will be focused particularly in this last institution, specifically the Sociedad de Artesanos de La Serena. The motivation for this study lies mainly inbecoming a contribution to the regional history and the scarce researches about the educator’s role in these societies.
