En primer lugar parece oportuno realizar una aproximación etimológica a los conceptos de educación y de saber. Por una parte el término educación, (del latín educere “guiar, conducir” o educare “formar, instruir”) se refiere al proceso multidireccional mediante el cual se transmiten conocimientos, valores, costumbres y formas de actuar. Pero la educación no sólo se transmite através de la palabra, si no que está presente en todas nuestras acciones, sentimientos y actitudes. En cuanto al término saber (del latín sapere, saber, entender) se refiere al conocimiento o información sobre una cosa.
