ABORTION WORLDWIDE
(EL ABORTO A NIVEL MUNDIAL)

Aquí se presentan algunos resultados obtenidos por investigadores y diversas organizaciones – entre las que se cuentan la Organiación Mundial de laSalud, el Instituto Alan Guttmacher y la organización Salud Familiar Internacional – en materia de aborto.

Algunos de los resultados que se enlistan son: la cantidad de abortos inseguros que serealizan a nivel mundial, el porcentaje de los abortos ilegales, la cantidad de mujeres que muere al año debido a abortos inseguros, el porcentaje de la población mundial que tiene acceso al abortolegal, y algunos otros datos interesantes.

ABORTION WORLDWIDE
Unsafe abortion is a major cause of death and health complications for women of child-bearing age. Whether or not an abortion is safe isdetermined in part by the legal status and restrictions, but also by medical practice, administrative requirements, the availability of trained practitioners, and facilities, funding, and publicattitudes.
While it is difficult to get reliable data on illegal and unsafe abortion, several well-known organizations and researchers, including the World Health Organization, the Alan GuttmacherInstitute, and Family Health International, make the following estimates:
Worldwide, 20 million unsafe abortions are performed annually. This equals one unsafe abortion for every ten pregnancies and oneunsafe abortion for every seven births.
Ninety percent of unsafe abortions are in developing countries.
One-third of all abortions worldwide are illegal. More than two-thirds of countries in the SouthernHemisphere have no access to safe, legal abortion.
Estimates of the number of women who die worldwide from unsafe abortions each year range from 70,000 to 200,000. This means that between 13 and 20%of all maternal deaths are due to unsafe abortion--in some areas of the world, half of all maternal deaths. Of these deaths, 99% are in the developing world, and most are preventable.
